Are you eager to craft compelling narratives that immerse readers in other times, but unsure where to begin? In this master class, we’ll address some crucial topics for historical fiction writers: material vs. emotional accuracy in world-building; the temptations and pitfalls of “reading backward”; shaping an accessible voice; cultural appropriation and research as a way of knowing; and methods for conducting research. This class will include writing exercises designed to help you brainstorm ideas and strategies for your own historical fiction project.

“The last large wild beasts are being hunted, poisoned, asphyxiated in one way or another, and the transmission of their wildness is dying, taming. A desert is rising with this falling pulse. It is our duty as poets and others who have not lost our jagged, creative edges to FILL that gap, and RESIST the urge to subdue our spirits and lose ourselves in the hypnotic beep of machines, of war, in the banal need for power, and things. With our poems and creative core we must RETURN THIS WORLD to its seismic levels of wildness.”
— CA Conrad, A Beautiful Marsupial Afternoon
This class will explore queerness as poetics, helping you, as writers of poems, to engage in the ancient, teeming, wide-eyed conversation that is poetry, and, by extension, develop a deeper relationship with yourselves and your community. We will discuss works by queer writers, do some in-class exercises and support each other in defining queer poetics for ourselves. Together we will consider what it means to show up whole and wild in one's work. All identities are welcome.

Fifteen and a half hours of continuous daylight, Summer Solstice is on its way! In previous years, Stacey and I have gathered with y'all in the Great Meadow in Forest Hill Park to greet the turning of the season. We watched the wind blow through the tops of the trees, the curious young deer wander nearby, the sun slowly descend down into the lake. We spread out blankets and sheets and laid down in the tall grass together. Fireflies and flowers and all of us breathing, moving, and resting together. These have always been magical evenings that I won't soon forget, and I'm excited to enjoy more time honoring the change.
Join us for an evening of qigong, yin yoga, meditation, a sound bath, and rest. Let's soak in the beauty of nature in this season, and prepare for the harvest ahead.
